Finally Fifteen

OK, internet peeps. I need some help here.

I was one of those blessed teenagers that never had breakouts. Like never. I think I had one pimple the entire time I was in high school.

Blessed, right? Well, wrong. Apparently you can't escape breakouts, only postpone them. Fast forward to present day, and holy crap, my face looks like I'm fifteen (or what it should have looked like at fifteen).

Pay back's a bitch.

I've tried everything... I stopped using makeup sponges, I got skin clearing foundation, I switched to powder, I got really legit concealer, I tried practically every face wash they carry at Target. And then Walgreen's. I even bought an acne treatment system from Clinique (face wash, toner, moisturizer), but NOTHING IS WORKING.

Gah. This is so lame.

I assume this is one of the lovely side affects to pregnancy and birth. Likely coupled by the fact that I am no longer on the pill (don't get excited here, I haven't been since Will was born and we're still using other methods of birth control). But I don't believe it's purely hormonal since I'm breaking out throughout the month. What gives?

So I'm looking for advice. Anything that worked for your breakouts as a teenager, or, if you're like me, as a postpartum, twenty-something woman. Products, tips, tricks, what have you. At this point I'll try anything.

  1. Acne sucks. This might seem a little dramatic, but just go see a good dermatologist and get a prescription for something and then follow his/her instructions for face wash and stuff. If they're decent, they'll look at what type of acne you have and treat accordingly. I feel like most of the stuff you can buy at a store is junk, even the expensive ones.

  3. Ditto again, see a dermatologist. I had the same problem after I went off birth control. I took a daily pill that helped along with a cream. Once I got pregnant my dermatologist recommended I discontinue all of it. Since the baby, I also have not gone back on birth control OR my face meds and instead use a face wash from Target - Acne Free, basically the same as Proactiv, that helps. My skin is not perfect, but it's good enough and I'd rather avoid pills if I can.

  4. Usually a skin problem is a sign that something is wrong on the inside. So just treating it topically may not help. :(. If you are open to it, I would recommend a biofeedback screening to check all of your hormone levels, etc. Then there might be something homeopathic that could help with your whole system. It takes your body like 3 years to recover from a pregnancy/breastfeeding, so I would guess something is just a bit off. I go to the Oshkosh wellness center for biofeedback, there is also Remedies, Harmony Wellness and a chiropractic office in Oshkosh that does it. Let me know if you want to talk more about it! :)
